Unruly passenger tried to enter cockpit on Swiss Air flight

SWISS AIR AIRBUS A220-171 HB-JBF (MSN 50015)

Swiss Airlines flight 19, en route from New York's Newark Liberty, USA (EWR/KEWR) to Zurich Switzerland (ZRH/LSZH), was forced to make an emergency return to Newark Liberty International Airport after an unruly passenger attempted to breach the cockpit twice. The airline reported that the incident occurred on the 31st of March shortly after the 9.50p.m. departure.

The unnamed passenger became very abusive towards the crew, resulting in minor injuries to one cabin crew member. The pilot, in communication with air traffic control, expressed concern about the passenger's escalating behavior and potential threat to others on board.

The aircraft, an Airbus A330 carrying 236 passengers and 13 crew members, safely landed back in Newark at approximately 11 p.m. Swiss Airlines arranged alternative flights for all passengers, and the crew, including the injured member, returned to Switzerland.

The New Jersey Port Authority Police apprehended the individual, charging him with interference with transportation and assault. He was subsequently released pending a court appearance. The Federal Aviation Administration has announced an investigation into the matter.
