American Airlines' hard landing sends 6 to hospital

AMERICAN AIRLINES AIRBUS A321-231 N107NN (MSN 5938)

An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles (LAX/KLAX) made such a hard landing at Maui's main airport, Kahului (OGG/KOGG) it sent five flight attendants and one passenger to the local hospital.

American flight AA 271 landed on runway 20 at Kahului Airport at 2.04 p.m. Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which said it was investigating.
Neither American Airlines nor the FAA provided additional details.

The Airbus 320 was carrying 167 passengers and seven crew, according to the airlines.

No damage was reported to the aircraft at the time, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a full investigation of the incident. The A321, carrying 167 passengers alongside seven crew members, has been removed from service pending inspection.

Airline passenger walked on wing of plane before takeoff

AEROMEXICO BOEING 737-852 XA-AML (MSN 36707)

A man has walked onto the wing of an airplane waiting to take off to Guatemala at the Mexico City International Airport on according to the Associated Press.

However, although the man “opened an emergency exit and walked out on a wing of a plane,” causing the aircraft to be delayed, some of his fellow passengers were not upset with him. AP reported that the plane was an AeroMexico flight to Guatemala that carried 77 passengers. No one was injured because the plane had not yet taken off when the man walked onto the wing.

Video circulated on social media shows the plane in question, with passengers disembarking from it and heading back into the airport. According to the AP, the man was “turned over to police.”

However, he was not without support; in fact, fellow passengers rallied to support the man, AP reported, even circulating a written statement that said he was trying “to protect everyone, with the support of everyone.”

The reason? According to AP, the man’s fellow passengers said the airline “made them wait for four hours without ventilation or water” because of a flight delay caused by a maintenance issue.

“All passengers on the flight from Mexico City to Guatemala, AM 0672, state that the passenger on board who opened the emergency window was for the protection of everyone, with the support of everyone, since the delay and lack of air created dangerous conditions for the health of the passengers,” the passengers’ note read, according to BBC.

The plane was supposed to leave at 8:45 a.m. but didn’t take off until after 2 p.m., according to a flight tracker, Flightradar24.

Remembering TAME flight 120

TAME flight 120 was a scheduled flight from Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport (UIO/SEQU), Ecuador to Cali Airport (CLO/SKCL) with a scheduled stopover at the Ecuadorian border town of Tulcán (TUA/SETU) also in Ecuador. On the 28th of January 2002 the Boeing 727 took off from runway 17 at 10:03 a.m. for the first leg to Tulcán. The flight climbed to the cruising altitude of FL180 and proceeded on the G-675 airway towards Ipiales from where it was to turn to Tulcán. At 10:15 a.m. the flight contacted Tulcán Tower. At that moment the airplane was 29 miles from the Tulcán NDB. The crew received permission to descend to FL140 and was given the current weather information, which included 8000 metres visibility, few clouds at 200 metres and overcast at 500 metres. The approach procedure called for a speed of 180 kts, but the actual speed was much higher at 230 knots. During the descent the airplane flew into the side of the Nevado el Cumbal Volcano at 14,700 feet, 1400 feet below the summit.

The decision of the instructor captain and his crew to initiate and continue the operation towards Tulcán airport below the meteorological minima established in the company's SOPs.
Inadequate navigation and operation of the aircraft by the pilot flying and directed by the instructor captain, consisting of entering the holding pattern of the Tulcan radio beacon with a speed of 230 knots indicated airspeed and with a banking of 15 degrees exceeding the maximum stipulated speed limit of 180 knots during the entire procedure including the holding pattern and using a banking below the recommended range of 25 to 30 degrees, thus exceeding the lateral navigation and obstacle protection limits of the holding pattern, leading this operation to the collision with El Cumbal Hill.

Skytrans to be acquired by Avia Solutions Group

SKYTRANS DASH 8 Q300 VH-QQP (MSN 592)

Australian regional airline Skytrans (QN/SKP) is to be acquired by Avia Solutions Group. The share purchase agreement is expected to finalise in March 2024 and will provide the Ireland-based capacity provider with an Australian air operator's certificate (AOC).

Skytrans operates a fleet of
  • five DHC-8-100s,
  • one DHC-8-300,
  • one DHC-8-Q300,
  • six Cessna (single turboprop) 208B Grand Caravans
across a network of airports, primarily in Northern Queensland. The airline flies a mix of scheduled passenger operations, freight flights, ad hoc and contract charters. In recent years, Skytrans has also become a more visible presence doing fly-in-fly-out work for mining and resource companies with operations in Queensland.

SKYTRANS DASH 8 Q100 VH-QQG (MSN 036)

"One of the main strategic objectives of the group is to expand into markets that have the opposite seasonality to Europe. Australia is a new addition to our group's global footprint, where we see significant potential and growth opportunities, enabling us to offer ACMI services", says Jonas Janukenas, CEO of Avia Solutions Group.

ASG says the Skytrans deal continues the group's strategic expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. Avia is the parent entity of SmartLynx Airlines, Avion Express, and is the world's largest ACMI operator. It holds AOCs from 11 countries. Avia says by the end of 2024, in addition to Australia, it aims to acquire airlines in Brazil, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Türkiye.

Milne says the acquisition, which remains subject to specific transaction commitments, will allow Skytrans to expand its operations, fleet, and geographic reach, while strengthening its market position.

Light plane crashes south-west of Sydney - Pilot feared dead

 BREAKING NEWS

A person is believed to have died after a light plane crashed south-west of Sydney, NSW Police have confirmed. It's understood a Cessna aircraft from a local flying school crashed in Brownlow Hill at about 3.15pm, about 9km from Camden Airfield, NSW (CDU/YSCN) where it took off.
Camden Airport is an aerodrome located on the outskirts of Sydney, 1 nautical mile northwest of Camden, New South Wales, Australia. The airport is located approximately 60 km southwest from Sydney city.
The crash occurred near Brownlow Hill Loop Road, according to police.

UPDATE

The pilot is believed to have lost contact with the control tower shortly after take-off.
The alarm was raised when a second pilot, looking to land at Camden Airport, asked the position of the Cessna 172, with the control tower realising it did not know.
Audio from air traffic control captured the moment a pilot flying overhead spotted the wreck.
"I think we've got an aeroplane on the ground here ... it doesn't look good," the pilot can be heard saying.

"Mate, it doesn't even look like an aeroplane, unfortunately."
The pilot and sole occupant of the plane, believed to be a 16-year-old boy, died at the scene, police said.
The plane had completed two trips already that day.

Remembering the crash of Royal Jordanian 707

On the 22nd of January 1973, a Royal Jordanian Boeing 707 travelling from Jeddah International Airport (JED/OEJD), Saudi Arabia to Lagos/Ikeja International Airport (LOS/DNMM), Nigeria crashed while attempting to land at Kano International Airport (KAN/DNKN). The aircraft had been chartered by Nigeria Airways to fly pilgrims back from Jeddah to Lagos. But unfortunately, bad weather at Lagos forced the crew to divert to Kano.

Amid strong winds, on the aircraft's final approach, the pilot-in-command was met with mist during the last phase. Subsequently, control was lost, and the plane nosed down and hit the runway surface with its nose gear first. The nose gear then collapsed, and both main gears punctured the fuel tanks. The 707 then lost both left engines before making an opposite turn and going up in flames.
As the fire took hold, and after a prolonged pause, some of the passengers and crew evacuated.
Sadly 176 passengers and crew perished in the crash. There were 26 survivors.

Drunk man bites cabin crew member

A US-bound ANA flight was forced to return to Tokyo after an intoxicated passenger bit a crew member mid-flight. The man, reportedly a 55-year-old American, was "heavily drunk" when he bit a cabin attendant's arm, slightly injuring her, a spokesman for the airline told AFP.
Japanese media said the man told police he had taken a sleeping pill and did not remember what happened.

The plane, which reportedly had 159 passengers on board, was over the Pacific Ocean when the incident happened, prompting its pilots to turn back to Tokyo's Haneda Airport. There the man was handed over to police and charged, the airline said.

It is the latest in a series of recent incidents to affect Japanese aviation.

It is the second incident to impact ANA in recent days - and the fifth involving the Japanese aviation industry in a matter of weeks. On Saturday, a domestic ANA flight in Japan had to turn back after a crack was discovered in the window of the cockpit. The crack appeared in the outermost of the four layers of window surrounding the cockpit, and there were no injuries to anyone on board.
"The crack was not something that affected the flight's control or pressurisation," an ANA spokesperson said.

The most serious of the recent incidents occurred at Haneda on the 2nd of January, when a Japanese Airlines aircraft collided with a smaller coastguard plane. All 379 people on board the passenger jet escaped before it burst into flames, but five of the six people on the smaller aircraft - which was supplying relief after a major earthquake hit central Japan - died.

On Tuesday, aircraft belonging to Korean Air and Cathay Pacific clipped wings at an airport on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido amid wintry conditions. There were no injuries. A similar incident occurred on Sunday when an ANA aircraft came into "contact" with a Delta Air Lines plane at Chicago airport in the United States, the Japanese airline told AFP, also causing no injuries.

When is the best time to book your flights

Whenever you book a flight have you ever thought that is expensive, why can't I find a cheaper flight. Well, I hope the below will give you some information and ideas.

Midweek
Flights tend to be cheaper in the middle of the week, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Weekend bookings usually cost more due to higher demand, so try to avoid Saturday and Sunday flights if you can. Monitoring the price trends for your proposed break will help you identify the best day to book. Because midweek bookings often have more availability, you may also be able to access more flexible travel options.

Three to six months in advance
Booking three to six months in advance can help you catch early bird discounts and promotional offers.
If you set up alerts on travel and airline websites, you can be informed about price drops or special deals, and if you’re flexible with your travel dates, you can capitalise on unexpected discounts that won’t be available later on.
This is what makes immediately after Christmas a great time to book, especially if you’re targeting a May or June departure.

At the last minute
Airlines often reduce prices on unsold seats close to the departure date to ensure maximum occupancy. However, relying on last-minute deals can be risky, especially during peak travel seasons or for destinations where availability is limited. If you’re not careful you might find yourself staying somewhere subpar, or in a bad location – or in the worst-case scenario, not being able to fly at all!

Looking for last-minute deals tends to work best when you’re flexible about where and when you’re going on holiday. Booking very close to your travel date is always a gamble, but if you get lucky, you could score an amazing deal.

Target off-peak seasons
Avoiding major holidays, school breaks, and peak tourist seasons can yield much cheaper fares. For instance, in Australia flying in December to February when travel demand is higher often results in much higher prices.

Additionally, flying on the actual holiday – like Easter Sunday or Christmas Day – can also be more economical.

Use flight comparison tools!
Flight comparison tools allow you to make broad comparisons across different airlines, dates, and routes, helping you see who’s offering the best combination for the vacation you’re planning. Prices on these platforms can change rapidly though, so regular checks might be required to catch a good deal.

These tools often offer features such as price alerts, which notify you when prices drop for your preferred route, making it easier to book at the right moment.

The key is to be strategic with your research and to sign up for notifications.
If you get the timing right, you’ll have more money to spend on your vacation.’

Flight attendant arrested for filming minors

An American Airlines flight attendant has been arrested for allegedly surreptitiously recording or attempting to record a minor female passenger using a lavatory aboard an aircraft he was working in September 2023. The defendant is also alleged to have possessed recordings of four additional minor female passengers using lavatories aboard the aircraft he had worked previously.

Estes Carter Thompson III, 36, of Charlotte, N.C., was charged with one count of attempted sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor. Thompson was arrested today in Lynchburg, Va. and will remain in custody pending his initial appearance in the Western District of Virginia. He will appear in federal court in Boston at a later date.

“The deeply disturbing conduct alleged here is something no parent or child should ever have to worry about when they travel. Mr. Thompson allegedly used his position to prey on and surreptitiously record innocent children, including unaccompanied minors, while in a vulnerable state aboard flights he was working,” said Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy. “Everyone – especially children – should feel safe and secure as airline passengers, and parents should feel comfortable traveling with their children. Protecting children is a paramount priority for this office and we will aggressively investigate and hold accountable people who victimize children.”

“Today, the FBI arrested Estes Carter Thompson III after he repeatedly targeted unsuspecting children to sexually exploit them for his own gratification. What Mr. Thompson is accused of doing is disgraceful, and we believe, calculated, given that this alleged conduct occurred on at least five flights,” said Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division. “This case should make it crystal clear that the FBI takes crimes aboard aircraft and the sexual exploitation of children seriously. If you’ve been the victim of a crime aboard an aircraft or have witnessed one take place, we ask you to report it to both your flight crew and the FBI.”

According to the charging documents, on the 2nd of Sept 2023, while working as a flight attendant onboard an American Airlines flight from Charlotte, N.C. to Boston, Mass., Thompson video-recorded or attempted to surreptitiously video-record a 14-year-old female passenger as she used the aircraft lavatory. Specifically, approximately midway through the flight, the minor victim got up to use the main cabin lavatory nearest to where she was seated. When the minor victim arrived at the lavatory it was occupied. After the minor victim had been waiting a short time, Thompson allegedly approached her, told her that the first-class lavatory was unoccupied and escorted her toward first class. Before the minor victim entered the lavatory, Thompson allegedly told her that he needed to wash his hands and that the lavatory’s toilet seat was broken and briefly entered the lavatory. It is alleged that, after Thompson exited the lavatory, the minor victim entered and observed red stickers on the underside of the toilet seat lid, which was in the open position, that stated, “INOPERATIVE CATERING EQUIPMENT” and “REMOVE FROM SERVICE,” and “SEAT BROKEN” was hand-written in black ink on one of the stickers. It is alleged that, beneath the red stickers, Thompson had concealed his iPhone to record a video. The minor victim used her phone to take a picture of the red stickers and the concealed iPhone she found in the lavatory before exiting, at which time Thompson allegedly re-entered it immediately.

According to court documents, when the minor victim returned to her seat, she informed her parents of what she saw and showed them the picture. The victim’s parents reported the matter to other flight attendants onboard who notified the Captain, who in turn notified law enforcement on the ground. It is alleged that the victim’s father confronted Thompson who, shortly thereafter, locked himself in the lavatory with his iPhone for three to five minutes prior to the flight’s descent.

Upon the flight’s arrival at Boston’s Logan Airport, law enforcement observed that Thompson’s iPhone may have been restored to factory settings. It is alleged that a subsequent search of Thompson’s suitcase was found to contain 11 “INOPERATIVE CATERING EQUIPMENT” stickers, like those observed by the minor victim on the back of the toilet seat. A search of Thompson’s iCloud account allegedly revealed four additional instances between January and August 2023 in which Thompson recorded a minor using the lavatory on an aircraft. The minor victims allegedly depicted in the surreptitious recordings were seven, nine, 11 and 14 years old at the time. Additionally, over 50 images of a nine-year-old unaccompanied minor were allegedly found in Thompson’s iCloud. The images included photos taken while the minor victim was seated in her seat pre-flight and close-ups of her face while sleeping.

All minor victims involved in this matter have been identified and their families contacted by law enforcement. It is further alleged that hundreds of images of AI-generated child pornography were also found stored on Thompson’s iCloud account.

The charge of attempted sexual exploitation of children provides for a sentence of at least 15 years and up to 30 years in prison. The charge of possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor provides for a sentence of at least five years and up to 20 years in prison. Both charges also provide for at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000 and restitution. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.

Acting U.S. Attorney Levy, FBI SAC Cohen and John E. Mawn Jr., Interim Colonel of the Massachusetts State Police made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elianna J. Nuzum of the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit https://www.justice.gov/psc.

The details contained in the charging documents are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Man found dead on Jet2 flight

A man has been found dead on a Jet2 flight after people became concerned about someone being in the toilet for a really long time. The passenger was discovered in the bathroom of the flight from Tenerife to Manchester last Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the airline said "Flight LS918 from Tenerife (TFS/GCTS) to Manchester (MAN/EGCC) diverted to Cork Airport (ORK/EICK) due to a customer requiring medical attention. Regrettably, we can confirm that the customer sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with the customer's family and friends at this very difficult time."

One passenger said: "My husband reported someone had been in toilet a very long time and he thought he was dead. Tragically he was right. "He informed the crew who were dismissive towards him. Toilets should be checked more regularly when an event like this happens. If they were, maybe the poor man could have been saved. I heard he travelled alone. Everyone on board was very upset by the tragic circumstances."

The aircraft should have landed in Manchester at 8.30pm but with diversion to Cork, the aircraft landed in Manchester around 1.30am."

Miracle on the Hudson

US Airways Flight 1549 was a regular scheduled US Airways flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport (LGA/KLGA) to Charlotte (CLT/KCLT) and Seattle (SEA/KSEA), in the United States.

On the 15th of January 2009, the Airbus A320, with call sign 'Cactus 1549', performing the flight struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off from LaGuardia, losing all engine power. Given their position in relation to the available airports and their low altitude, pilots Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles decided to glide the plane to ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan.
The flight was cleared for takeoff to the northeast from LaGuardia's Runway 4 at 3:24 pm local time.
With Skiles in control, the crew made its first report after becoming airborne at 3:25 as being at 700 feet (210 m) and climbing.

At 3:27 during climbout, the plane struck a flock of Canada geese at an altitude of 2,818 feet (859 m) about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north-northwest of LaGuardia. The pilots' view was filled with the large birds; passengers and crew heard very loud bangs and saw flames from the engines, followed by silence and an odor of fuel.
At 3:27 Sullenberger radioed a 'MAYDAY' call to New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) "... this is Cactus fifteen thirty-nine hit birds. We've lost thrust on both engines; we're turning back towards LaGuardia."

Sullenberger asked controllers for landing options in Teterboro Airport. Permission was given for Teterboro's Runway 1. Sullenberger initially responded "Yes", but then: "We can't do it ... We're gonna be in the Hudson". The aircraft passed less than 900 feet (270 m) above the George Washington Bridge. Sullenberger commanded over the cabin address system to "brace for impact" and the flight attendants relayed the command to passengers. Meanwhile, air traffic controllers asked the Coast Guard to caution vessels in the Hudson and ask them to prepare to assist with rescue. About ninety seconds later, at 3:31 pm, the plane made an unpowered ditching into the middle of the North River section of the Hudson tidal estuary.

All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with only a few serious injuries.

The media quickly dubbed this water landing of a powerless jetliner with no deaths "the Miracle on the Hudson" and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history".

The pilots and flight attendants were awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in recognition of their "heroic and unique aviation achievement."

Two dead from light plane crash South of Brisbane.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics have rushed to the scene at Boonah Golf Club on Bruckner Hill Road in Dugandan, south of Boonah, just before midday today following reports of a light plane crash. On arrival they treated the two passengers for critical injuries suffered during the crash of their Tecnam P92-TD Tail Dragger.
However, police have since confirmed both died from their injuries about 3.30pm.

Boonah Airfield is a country grass airstrip situated in the picturesque Scenic Rim, just 1 hours' drive south west of Brisbane. The airstrip, 04 and 22, was established in 1978 and it has long been a haven for recreational pilots and aviation enthusiasts. It is the home base of the Flying Tigers Ultralight Club, the Boonah Gliding Club, Airsport Qld flying lessons and Ultimate Aero an aircraft maintenance organisation.

Boonah Airfield is also a valuable regional infrastructure asset for the local Boonah community and wider area. It is used as a base for aerial waterbomber aircraft during bushfires and for medical patient air transport as required.

It is the second light aircraft plane to crash in Queensland so far this year after a plane flipped and crashed on an island resort in the far north Great Barrier Reef last week.

Ural Airlines to scrap the A320 that landed in a field

On the 12th of September 2023, a Ural Airlines flight travelling from Adler/Sochi Airport (AER/URSS) to Omsk Airport (OMS/UNOO) was forced to land in the field just outside Novosibirsk, in southern Siberia while diverting to Novosibirsk Airport (OVB/UNNT).

While on approach to the destination airport, Omsk, the flight suffered a loss of the Green hydraulic system. The flight crew decided to divert to their alternate, Novosibirsk, because of the longer runway at Novosibirsk. The crew reported that they would not have any nosewheel steering on landing.
The undercarriage was retracted, but the crew did not realise that the gear could not be retracted due to the loss of the Green hydraulic system. En route to Novosibirsk, the flight began to run out of fuel. An emergency was declared, and the aircraft began a descent, which ended in an emergency landing in a field. According to news reports, the Airbus A320 is to be dismantled in the field where it stopped.

A Russian aviation Telegram channel, said that after a thorough evaluation has been completed, the decision has been made to dismantle the plane for parts and not attempt to fly the Airbus A320 out of the field as was previously proposed.

It has been revealed that Ural Airlines has paid the farmer a year’s rent for wheat field holding the stranded Airbus until spring 2024. The Ural Airlines plane remains in the field just outside Novosibirsk, in southern Siberia, protected by 24-hour private security in a fenced off area.
