12 dead in Colombia plane crash

A Douglas DC-3 aircraft has crashed on a flight between the towns of San Jose del Guaviare  (SJE/SKSJ) and Villavicencio (VVC/SKVV) killing all 12 people on board.  The wreckage was found close to Villavicencio city. The aircraft fuselage forward of the wings was completely destroyed by fire. The authorities are trying to establish exactly how many occupants were on board. The Defensa Civil emergency services put the death toll at 12, while Aeronautica Civil said investigators were still working "to determine the number and identities" of those traveling on the DC-3. The pilot made a distress call then lost contact before crashing in Meta. Aeronautica Civil gave no details on what caused the crash. The distress call was made at 10.40am local time.
This DC-3 had been manufactured in 1945 at the Oklahoma City plant as a TC-47B-DK. This aircraft had two 1200 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90C’s engines with a MTOW of 13.600 kg. and had been modified for training, with 3 astrodomes and aft DF loop antenna. In November 1945 it had been transferred from the USAAF to the US Navy and thus became a R4D-7. When it's military career was over, its civilian life started as N87611 for the University of Texas and she was based in Austin, TX. It was exported to Colombia in 1980 and registered as HK2494X for SAEP Ltd. In April 2015 it operated for Sadelca and some months after she was sold again. Since October 2015 it has been owned by Laser Aero of Villavicencio.

The Douglas DC-3 aircraft is a twin-engine propeller plane that was first produced in the 1930s
