Earlier this year Qantas confirmed it will be opening pilot training schools across two Australian regional cities, and last week they put and end to months of speculation. Toowoomba's Wellcamp Airport (WBT / YBWW) was announced as the first site for its much-anticipated Pilot Training Academy. The announcement was made at Wellcamp Airport by Qantas CEO Alan Joyce, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Wagner Corporation director Denis Wagner. Toowoomba was chosen out of nine shortlisted locations. The other locations in the running for the second site include Alice Springs, Bendigo, Busselton, Dubbo, Launceston, Mackay, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga. Wellcamp Airport owners, the Wagner family, has committed $55 million to build the facility and started turning the soil last Friday. The academy is expected to bring 700 new jobs to the region and could boost the local economy by $600 million. The first training site is scheduled to open its doors mid 2019 and would be initially for direct entry cadets joining the Qantas Group, including Jetstar and QantasLink. The second site is expected to be operational in 2020 and Qantas is expected to announce the location for a second academy soon.
