Having to attend a family gathering in Hervey Bay this Saturday I decided; since I was owed a day off in lieu; my family and I would head up to Hervey Bay Thursday night and make it a long weekend. Hervey Bay is 388klms (188 miles) north of Brisbane (about 3 1/2 hours drive)
Hervey Bay is the "Whale Watching" capital of Australia, with humpback whales migrating along the coast between April and October every year. Everywhere you go in Hervey Bay you see something to do with Whales.
After walking the beach and visiting a few tourist sights we headed out to the airport for a twin midday arrival. They get a Qantas Link Q 300 from Brisbane and a Virgin Australia E190 from Sydney ten minutes apart. The airport is located 9.3 km (5.8 miles) southeast of the heart of Hervey Bay.
Hervey Bay Airport (IATA: HVB, ICAO: YHBA) is the main airport for the city of Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast region, it is owned and run by the Fraser Coast Regional Council. The airport has an elevation of 18 metres (60 feet) ASML and has one runway; 11/29 with an asphalt surface measuring 2,000 m × 30 m (6,562 feet × 98 feet). This airport does not have a control tower so pilots are required to communicate via a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to safely co-ordinate arrivals and departures.
