123 passengers left on a Lufthansa flight overnight

LUFTHANSA AIRBUS A320-214 D-AIUM (MSN 6577)

Passengers aboard a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo were forced to spend the night on the aircraft after their late-evening flight from Munich Airport (MUC/EDDM) to Copenhagen Airport (CPH/EKCH) was cancelled just before midnight, leaving them unable to return to the terminal.

The incident involved Lufthansa flight LH2446, which had been scheduled to depart Munich at 9:30 p.m. on the 19th of February for the one-hour-and-twenty-minute journey. After significant delays, passengers were transported by bus to the aircraft parked at a remote stand.

Shortly before midnight, however, the flight was cancelled due to Munich Airport’s nighttime operating curfew. According to passenger accounts, Lufthansa was unable to arrange apron buses to take travelers back to the terminal because all bus drivers had already gone home for the night. Because of airside security restrictions, passengers were not permitted to disembark on foot.

Approximately 123 passengers reportedly remained on the short-haul aircraft overnight with limited food and no blankets or pillows. Buses finally arrived early the next morning after the airport reopened, allowing passengers to leave the aircraft and make new travel arrangements.

The incident has raised serious questions about how a major international hub can allow passengers to be stranded onboard an aircraft overnight with no immediate contingency plan.
