Virgin Australia slashes carry-on cabin baggage allowance

Virgin Australia will restrict economy passengers to one standard carry-on bag under new rules starting on the 2nd of February 2026.

Economy X travelers, however, will still enjoy a two-bag allowance like business class passengers and Velocity Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus frequent flyers. The airline says this change, enforced at major airports, aims to reduce frustration over overhead bin space and improve the boarding experience.

Bags often get placed further back, causing aisle congestion upon arrival. Virgin's Chief Operations Officer, Chris Snook, said the changes, based on feedback, will lead to a smoother journey and more comfort onboard. A survey found 79% of passengers support enforcing carry-on rules, an issue worsened by the addition of more economy seats in Virgin’s reconfigured Boeing 737 jets.
