BREAKING NEWS
Two Delta Air Lines Mitsubishi CRJ 900 aircraft have collided at New York's LaGuardia airport on Wednesday evening. According to a statement from the airline, the incident involved a "low-speed collision during taxi," with one jet bound for Virginia and the other arriving from North Carolina. Delta reported that the wing of the departing aircraft made contact with the fuselage of the arriving plane.
Both jets, operated by Delta's subsidiary Endeavour Air, had passengers onboard, 28 on the Virginia-bound flight and 57 on the North Carolina arrival. The collision occurred at 9 p.m. E.T.
Delta stated its commitment to fully cooperating with authorities in the investigation.
A CBS News producer at the airport confirmed the collision, and a video from the scene showing the aftermath has surfaced online. At least one injury has been reported, but details about the person’s condition remain unknown.
Preliminary reports identify the planes involved as Delta Flight DL5047, traveling from Charlotte (CLT/KCLT) to LaGuardia (LGA/KLGA) and Delta Flight DL5155 traveling from LaGuardia (LGA/KLGA) to Roanoke (ROA/KROA).
LaGuardia Airport, New York's second-busiest airport after JFK International, primarily handles domestic travel. This incident is expected to cause delays and disruptions as officials investigate what led to the collision. Authorities have not yet explained how the planes ended up in the same taxiing space. The FAA and NTSB are likely to investigate whether human error, miscommunication, or another issue was to blame.
