Sriwijaya Air Flight 182 crashes off Indonesia

A Sriwijaya Air plane flying from Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK/WIII), Indonesia to Pontianak Airport (PNK/WIOO), Indonesia with 62 SOB lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after taking off from Indonesian capital Jakarta yesterday afternoon and crashed into the ocean killing all on board. Indonesia’s search and rescue agency confirmed that the country's aviation authorities had lost contact with Sriwijaya Air Flight 182. Indonesian Transportation Ministry spokesperson Adita Irawati said the Boeing 737-500 took off from Jakarta on runway 25R at about 2.36pm and lost contact with the control centre 4 minutes later at 2.40pm, local time. A spokesman for the search and rescue agency, Yusuf Latif, said it had not been confirmed how many people were on board, although the flight manifest listed 46 passengers, 7 children, 3 babies and 6 flight crew.
Latif said search and rescue teams were on their way to search for the plane at Thousand Islands in the Java sea. There were early reports of suspected debris off Jakarta. FlightRadar24 show the plane lost more than 3000 metres (10,000 feet) in altitude in less than one minute, about four minutes after departure from Jakarta. A plane flying from Jakarta to Pontianak would spend most of the flight over the Java Sea.
