During the mid-1980s, Gulf Air began to cut back its services to Dubai as it was concerned it was providing regional feeder flights for other carriers. As a result of this, Emirates airline was conceived.
Emirates airlines, based in Dubai United Arab Emirates, was founded on the 25th March 1985 and commenced operations on the 25th October 1985. On this day back in 1985, Emirates flew its first routes out of Dubai with just two aircraft; a leased Boeing 737 and an Airbus 300 B4. The aircraft arrived in Dubai on the 20th October on a wet lease from Pakistan International Airlines.

On the morning of the 25th October 1985 flight EK 600 departed Dubai International for Karachi. A few months later the Royal Family's Dubai Royal Air Wing provided the airline with two used Boeing 727–200 Adv as a gift. Fast forward to today and Emirates operate a fleet of 270 aircraft, and currently fly to over 155 destinations in more than 80 countries around the world. Emirates is the worlds largest operator of the Airbus A380. The airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is wholly owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai.
It is the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,600 flights per week from its hub at Dubai International Airport. At the Skytrax awards earlier this year Emirates was voted 4th place as the world's best airline. (behind Singapore 1st, Qatar 2nd and ANA All Nippon 3rd). Since the introduction of the Airbus A380 it has become an integral part of Emirates fleet, especially on long-haul high-traffic routes. Emirates had the world's longest non-stop commercial flight from Dubai to Auckland for a while there until it was surpassed by Qatar Airways flying from Doha to Auckland. But now there is a new world's longest flight and that is the Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to New York. Emirates is also the world's largest Boeing 777 operator with over 160 planes in service.
