After arriving in Auckland earlier today we headed off for a social gathering (dinner and drinks) before the conference kicks off tomorrow.
Dinner tonight was at the famous Orbit 360 rotating restaurant situated at the top of Auckland’s Sky Tower, the dining room rotates once every hour, providing a truly unique experience with amazing 360-degree views of the city, the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf.
The Sky Tower itself has been an iconic landmark of the Auckland City skyline since 1996 and at 328 metres (just over 1,076 feet), it is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand.
There are two observation platforms up the tower that offer amazing views of Auckland, and on a fine day you are supposed to be able to see up to 80klm's. The lift up has a glass floor so you can see the ground quickly move away from you, and then half way up the concrete walls stop and with the glass doors you can watch the view of the city as you climb up to the viewing deck. The main observation level is on level 51 at 186 metres (610 feet). On this level there are small sections of the floor that are made of thick glass that you can stand on as you look straight down at the people and streets below. I'm not afraid of heights at all but last time I visited here with my family I couldn't walk on the glass flooring. Although it is still nerve-wracking when you go to stand it, the staff assured me it is as strong as concrete.
