Auckland Maritime Museum

While the other Rapid members went on a day tour of Waiheke Island I headed off to Auckland Airport for a day of plane spotting. But tonight it was time to get serious again as we headed out for pre dinner drinks and then on for dinner. Tonight's venue was at the Maritme Museum. The New Zealand Maritime Museum (Hui Te Anaui A Tangaroa) is located on Hobson Wharf, adjacent to the Viaduct Harbour in central Auckland. It houses exhibitions spanning New Zealand's maritime history, from the first Polynesian explorers and settlers to modern day triumphs at the America's Cup. Its Maori name is 'Te Huiteanaui-A-Tangaroa' - holder of the treasures of Tangaroa (the Sea God). It was to be the first and only museum that dealt with New Zealand’s maritime history as a whole, and was to be called the Auckland Maritime Museum Hobson Wharf. The Museum opened in August 1993 with Dr. Rodney Wilson as its inaugural director. The name was then changed to the New Zealand National Maritime Museum.
