Vietjet are under fire for parading provocative models on flight
Budget carrier Vietjet thought it was a great idea to send barely clad women on board a plane full of Vietnam’s under-23 football squad on the weekend and have them strut their stuff. However it was all just horribly awkward, leading the airline to issue an apology. The team were heading home from China, where they had suffered a crushing defeat against Uzbekistan in the Under-23 Asian Football Confederation championship. Social media in the communist nation erupted after photos of the event were posted online, including a snap of an awkward-looking man being embraced by a woman in a low-cut top and red underwear, with his seatmate giggling. Many thought it was inappropriate for the lingerie models to accompany the young men. “Vietjet’s move was so rude, cheap and offensive to the team, the fans and even its passengers,” Facebook user Nguyen My Linh wrote in a post that has gone viral. Another traveller, Le Nguyen, wrote: “It’s disgusting. I will boycott Vietjet for this.” Along with the apology, Vietjet claims it was simply an “improvised move” and not a marketing stunt. It also said that “relevant staff” had been disciplined.
However it’s not the first time the airline has been criticised for raunchy stunts — in 2012 the airline was fined 20 million dong (about $1000) when it hosted a mid-flight dance by bikini-clad women. The five candidates from a local beauty contest performed the three-minute Hawaiian-themed dance in front of passengers.
VietJet Air or Vietjet, is an international low-cost airline from Vietnam. It was the first privately owned new-age airline to be established in Vietnam, being granted its initial approval to operate by the Vietnamese Minister of Finance in November 2007. As of its launch in December 2011, it became the second private airline to offer domestic service in Vietnam, as well as the fifth airline overall to offer civil domestic flights. VietJet Air's first flight was operated on 25 December 2011, flying from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. With a fleet of 53 aircraft, 24 A320's, 28 A321's and 1 A321NEO The carrier carried its 10th millionth passenger in December 2014 and the 25 millionth passenger on December 5, 2015
