Brisbane has secured a major international Asian aviation conference, to be held in 2018, which will attract more than 1000 airline, airport and tourism delegates from 100 countries to the Queensland capital.
Routes Asia, which was recently held this week in Manila, was set up as an airline and airport networking event in 1996 to open up new opportunities for air links between cities.
Brisbane Airport Corporation chief executive Julieanne Alroe said it was an honour for Brisbane to have been chosen to host what she called the "largest and most important route development event" for aviation companies that did business in Asia.
"Dozens of influential cities from across Asia bid for the chance to host delegates for the Routes Asia conference and it is a reflection of Brisbane and Queensland's growing importance and profile that it has been chosen for this event," she said.
The event will be held over three days, on March 18th -20th 2018, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
It was expected to attract some of the largest airlines in Asia, along with airport representatives and tourism authorities.
Tourism Australia managing director John O'Sullivan said: "It's a great honour for 'Team Australia' to host this prestigious event in 2018 and demonstrate first hand to the world's route planners exactly why Australia is such a great investment proposition for future aviation development."
His state counterpart, Tourism and Events Queensland chief executive Leanne Coddington, said Routes Asia 2018 would enhance the state's reputation as a destination for significant business events.
"Hosting this prominent international forum and some of the region's most influential airlines brings immediate benefit in these delegates coming to Brisbane, offering the chance to showcasing the inspiring experiences Queensland has to offer," she said.
Federal Tourism Minister Richard Colbeck said it was an opportunity for Australia to capitalise on possible aviation investment opportunities, particularly when it came to route planning.
"Asia is a vital market for Australia and is our largest growth market," he said.
"More than 1 million visitors from China alone visited Australia last year, an increase of 21 per cent while expenditure increased 45 per cent to reach a new record high of $8.3 billion."
