Malaysia Airlines set to dump Brisbane flights

MALAYSIA B777-200ER 9M-MRL (CN 29065)

Malaysia Airlines is set to suspend its daily Kuala Lumpur – Brisbane services from the 9th August. According to local sources the carrier is also set to close its Brisbane office.
The Malaysian flag carrier has signalled it would undertake significant cuts to its workforce, believed to be up to six thousand people. A rationalization of the route network, including terminating services and a reduction in frequencies is also being done in order to turn the carrier around to profitability. The airline’s new CEO, Mr Christopher Mueller, has declared the carrier “technically bankrupt” and is undertaking these drastic measures after the tragic events of MH17 and MH370 in 2014. Malaysian Airlines System (MAS), the parent company to Malaysia Airlines is under administration and it is set to become a new company from 01 September 2015 as Malaysia Airlines Berhard (MAB). A completely new brand and name is also being considered to relaunch a completely new airline.
