Mackay Airport

I woke early from my amazing 4 poster bed in this amazing 130 year old Hotel in Rockhampton that I stay at. I had a quick continental breakfast and then checked out as I wanted to be on the road at 7am. Instead of heading home like I normally do on a Friday I had a 4 hour drive ahead of me as I headed off to Mackay for a working weekend.

                                                                                                                                                                  I used to call into Mackay 4 times a year as part of my regular call cycle; but changes within my company two years ago put an end to that. Due to two Trade Shows in Mackay simultaneously this weekend I was called on to offer assistance; so I was lucky to get some time in Mackay again.
Mackay is nicknamed the "sugar capital of Australia" because its region produces more than a third of Australia's cane sugar.
Mackay Airport (IATA: MKY, ICAO: YBMK) is 6 metres (19 feet) above sea level; it is located 6 klm's (3 miles) from the city centre and is built in a residential suburb. Mackay airport has a control tower and it is operational from 6am - 8pm (20.00 Zulu -10.00 Zulu) . Mackay has two runways; the main runway 14/32 is 1,981 metres (6,499 feet) long and is asphalt. The second and smaller runway is also asphalt it is 05/23; it is 1,344 metres (4,409 feet) long.
All four major airlines service Mackay;

QANTAS services Brisbane, Townsville and Rockhampton;
Virgin Australia services Brisbane and Sydney;
Jetstar services Brisbane and Gold Coast
Tiger Airways services Melbourne

I arrived in Mackay around 11-15am and of course headed straight to the airport to catch the (luckily delayed) Tiger Air and a few others departures. I then met up with a work colleague who arrived earlier and after having lunch we set up one of two trade show displays.
