Today my work has taken to a place called Gladstone, I normally fly into Rockhampton and service Gladstone, but this week I have a trade show in Gladstone Monday afternoon, Bundaberg Tuesday afternoon, Maryborough Wednesday afternoon and Gympie Thursday afternoon, heading home Friday.
Gladstone is 533 klm's (331 miles) from Brisbane and the Airport (IATA: GLT, ICA: YGLA) is located in the western suburbs of Gladstone, about 10 klm's (6.2 miles) from the town's centre.
The airport; being the 32nd busiest airport in Australia; is owned and operated by the Gladstone Regional Council. The airport is 18 mts (59 Feet) above sea level and it only has one runway.
This runway is 10/28 and it is 1,920 metres long (6,299 feet) ,the airport is mainly serviced by Qantas Link, a subsidiary of Qantas; using Dash 8 Q400's and 717's with most services non-stop to, or from Brisbane. A small number of flights operate northwards to Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and as far north as Cairns.
Virgin Australia commenced services from Brisbane to Gladstone in October 2011 using ATR 72 aircraft with the Embraer 190 also making regular appearances in the schedule.
Gladstone is home to Queensland's largest multi-commodity port and the world's fourth largest coal exporting terminal. This airport does not have a control tower so pilots are required to communicate via a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to safely co-ordinate arrivals and departures.
