Emirates AC Milan comes to Brisabane

Every morning before I get up I check the aircraft radars and Flightaware to see if there is anything interesting going on. Today we had the Emirates A380 A6-EET with AC Milan players on the side. Not having seen this one before I ventured out to grab a photo of this before heading off on my busy day. EET hasn't called into Brisbane since the 21st January.  The morning started with a few regular high flyers over flying our home on their way to Auckland; since it doesn't get light until around 6am most of them over flew us in the dark, but I was lucky enough to get this Malaysia A330.

Before my first appointment I headed to an area I know well on the Southside of Brisbane to grab the departure of the Emirates A380 and a the Korean Air a few minutes later.

Four-Month-Old baby dies on Cathay Flight

CATHAY PACIFIC A330-343 B-HLS (CN 423)                File Photo

A four-month-old baby girl died on a flight from London to Hong Kong after a medical emergency that forced the plane to divert to Kazakhstan.
Her parents raised the alarm after finding their daughter unconscious on a Cathay Pacific Airways plane while flying to visit relatives in China.
A passenger, who is a nurse, stepped in to give the baby first aid as the pilot made an emergency landing at Almaty Airport in Kazakhstan where paramedics were on standby.
However, the infant, named Jasmine by Chinese media, was confirmed dead at the airport on Sunday.
Her devastated parents made the torturous decision to continue their journey to Hong Kong with their daughter.
Passengers said the parents were 'emotionally distraught' for the rest of the flight.
The couple – a French father, 32, and a Chinese-French mother, 36 – had been planning to take a transfer flight to Changsha in China’s Hunan province from Hong Kong to visit relatives.
Preliminary tests by doctors from the Airport Medical Centre and the Port Health Office in Hong Kong found nothing suspicious
The baby is believed to have suffered from a gastrointestinal disorder before boarding the plane at Heathrow and drank milk while on board.
A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death. My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents and families during this dark time.

Care Flight

As mention in my post last Saturday (9th April) I was given an airside tour of the Care Flight hanger and to my surprise I saw a Challenger 604 in the hanger. I was told about how this aircraft (below)  was once owned and used by Miley Cyrus and since it has been here in Australia famous groups like KISS and Fleetwood Mac have flown in this aircraft. When I told my girls they were extremely excited and when I told Timmo he said without hesitation; "bring them over for a look".

Well since we were going out for afternoon tea today with family we thought we would venture over to the airport first.

After checking out the logistics apron and catching Qantas 15 heading off to L.A we ventured over to the hanger so my girls could see and get to sit in this famous aircraft. Much to our disappointment the Challenger was called out on a job about an hour before.
But Timmo made sure the girls weren't disadvantaged to much and showed them a really good time as they climbed in and out of the helicopter and donned the helmets.

Last time I was there the Learjet (VH-VVI) was all closed up and I couldn't see inside; this time they had a different Learjet VH-CXJ and it was going to go out in just over an hour or so the pilots were on their way in. After a brief introduction we were invited on to the Lear and Dugald wasted no time explaining how things worked. He fired up the displays and even went through the pre-flight checks of alarms etc. Dugald took the time to explain everything in great detail. It wasn't long before I realised the team at Care Flight are an amazing bunch of guys and extremely friendly and patient.

EVERYONE BUCKLED UP!!!

Dugald then asked me if I would like to come inside and watch as he logs his flight plan for his trip to Cairns and back. This was something I found extremely interesting and I know it is not something the normal person would get to see. While Dugald and I were logging his flight plan Timmo yelled out "I have to go", as a job came in and it wasn't long and he was off.  (My wife took the below images)

While Dugald and his team got ready we took advantage of the great viewing spot and took a few photos of aircraft departing.

It was then time for the Lear to be pushed out

But due to our commitments in the city we couldn't wait any longer and had to leave.
We had a really lovely time there and once again our thanks go out to Timmo and Dugald.

Emirates orders two more Airbus A380's

EMIRATES A380-861 A6-EEL (CN 133)                           File Photo L.A

Emirates has placed an order with Airbus to buy two more A380 superjumbo aircraft, with deliveries scheduled in the last quarter of next year.
Operating the largest Airbus A380s fleet in the world, Emirates currently has 75 A380s in service and another 65 on firm order.
Valued at $865.2m the newly ordered double-decker A380s will be powered by Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines. From now until the end of 2017, Emirates will retire 30 older aircraft from their fleet.
"At the same time, to meet our growth expectations, we will receive delivery of 24 new Boeing 777, and 33 new A380 aircraft including these two additional A380 aircraft just ordered.
"This is in line with our strategy to operate a modern and efficient fleet and offer the best possible experience for our customers."
The two additional A380's will feature two-class configuration and Emirates' products such as an onboard lounge, where business class passengers can socialise during their flight; Emirates' in-flight entertainment with more than 2,500 channels, and free Wi-Fi.
The carrier is planning to introduce flights to Prague, Taipei and Vienna, increasing its flagship A380 aircraft route network to 42 destinations worldwide.

Air traffic controllers charged over crash

TAIWAN has charged two air traffic control officers with causing a TransAsia plane crash that killed 49 people in 2014, the first prosecutions in the island’s worst air disaster for a decade.
The plane’s two pilots, who died in the crash, were also blamed for flying Flight GE222 into a residential area as the aircraft attempted to land at Magong city airport in the Penghu islands.
“The four people are found to have been negligent in their duties over this crash,” the Penghu prosecutors said in a statement on Thursday, referring to the two air traffic control officers and the pair of pilots.
The pilots will not be prosecuted, (gee I wonder why!!!) but ground staff in charge of air traffic that day are being sued for criminal negligence, which carries a jail term of up to five years.
Taiwan’s aviation body in January said the pilots had caused the crash on July 23, 2014, by flying too low as they tried to land during a typhoon.
The probe also blamed other factors for the disaster, including poor communication of weather information to the flight crew and coordination issues at Magong airport.
Prosecutors said on Thursday that a senior duty officer at Magong surnamed Ching, and another member of staff surnamed Li contributed to the crash by not allowing the plane to land.
The pair spoke for 12 minutes after receiving the plane’s request to land but Ching did not give the necessary approval considering the bad weather conditions.
TransAsia has seen several accidents in recent years that have raised concern about the airline’s safety standards.
The plane crashed in a heavy storm near Magong Airport on Taiwan's Penghu island, leaving 49 dead. Ten people survived. The crash was the first of two fatal TranAsia incidents within the span of seven months.
The second crash, involving TransAsia flight 235, happened when the aircraft clipped a bridge in Taipei and came down in the Keelung River in February 2015, leaving 43 people dead.
The aircraft was an ATR72-500 B-22810 (CN 642)
While I was doing some research on this aircraft I found the below list of accidents the airline has had.

  • On 30 January 1995, a TransAsia Airways ATR 72-200 (B-22717) crashed into a hillside during flight from Penghu to Taipei. All 4 crew members died.
  • On 6 January 1996, a man, disappointed with domestic political and social developments in Taiwan, hijacked TransAsia Airways Flight 529, an Airbus A321-131,en route to Tainan.
  • On December 21, 2002, Flight 791, an ATR 72-200 (B-22708), crashed due to icing, during a flight from Taipei to Macau. Both crew members died.
  • On March 21, 2003, Flight 543, an Airbus A321-131 (B-22603) collided with a truck upon landing at Tainan Airport at the end of a flight from Taipei Songshan Airport.
  • On 18 October 2004, Flight 536, an Airbus A320-232 (B-22310), rolled off the runway during landing 321 feet from the end of runway 10 at Taipei Songshan Airport, ending up with the nosegear in a ditch.
  • On July 23, 2014, Flight 222, an ATR 72-500 (B-22810) carrying 54 passengers and 4 crew members from Kaohsiung to Magong crashed near Magong Airport on Penghu Island. Forty-nine people were confirmed dead while at least 7 of the 11 survivors were seriously injured. Some reports suggest there were also 5 casualties on the ground when the plane impacted residential buildings. This crash is the deadliest for the airline. The cause was the pilot's intentional descent below minimum descent altitude during an approach in a storm.
  • On February 4, 2015, Flight 235, an ATR 72-600 (B-22816), had an engine failure after takeoff and crashed at 10:56 AM local time into the Keelung River near Taipei, killing 43 of the 53 passengers and 5 crew on board.

Air Canada's predecessor, Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA), was established on 11 April 1936.
Using $5 million in Crown seed money, two Lockheed Model 10 Electra's and one Boeing Stearman biplane were purchased from Canadian Airways and experienced airline executives from United Airlines and American Airlines were brought in.
Passenger flights began on 1 September 1937, with an Electra carrying two passengers and mail from Vancouver to Seattle, a $14.20 round trip, and, on 1 July 1938, TCA hired their first flight attendants. Transcontinental routes from Montreal to Vancouver began on  the 1st April 1939, using 12 Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra's and six Lockheed Model 18 Lodestars. By January 1940, the airline had grown to about 500 employees. By 1964, TCA had grown to become Canada's national airline and, in 1964, Jean Chrétie submitted a private member's bill to change the name of the airline from Trans-Canada Airlines to Air Canada, which TCA had long used as its French-language name. This bill failed but it was later resubmitted and passed, with the name change taking effect on 1 January 1965.
Fast forward to today and Air Canada, with their Headquarters in Montreal, Quebec Canada has over 29,000 employees and a fleet of Airbus A330, Boeing 767, Boeing 777, Boeing 787 wide-body jetliners on long-haul routes and uses the Airbus A319, A320, and A321 variations, and Embraer E190 family aircraft on short-haul routes. The carrier's operating divisions include Air Canada Cargo, Air Canada Express and Air Canada rouge.
Air Canada will begin direct flights from Brisbane to Vancouver on the 1st June this year using Boeing 787-8 aircraft which I am really looking forward too.

Visit to the RACQ Care Flight Hanger

As mentioned in my last post, about a month ago I was invited over to the RACQ Care Flight hanger for a look through; today after a few hours of plane spotting I took up that offer. Arriving at the facilities I called up my new found friend Timmo and was invited in. I was shown through the building; and after meeting a few more of the Care Flight crew I was offered a coffee in their lunch room.
We then walked out into the hanger area where I really got excited as not only was the Agusta Westland helicopter there but so was their Learjet and their Challenger.
We walked over to the Westland and I was offered a seat inside.
Timmo took the time to explain every aspect of the helicopter and what each button meant or what the screen displays meant. Putting on the helmet I could hear ATC talking and it really made the experience real.

    WHAT DOES THIS BUTTON DO...

After a few photos and about 20 minutes later we walked over to the Lear; unfortunately it was closed and we couldn't enter but I enjoyed being right up close to it.

    CARE FLIGHT  LEARJET 45 VH-VIV (CN 262)

We then walked over to the Challenger and this is where Timmo floored me with some information. This actual aircraft belonged to Walt Disney and it was used in the Hannah Montana movie and actually flew Hanna (aka Miley Cyrus)  around. Timmo went on to say since the aircraft has been here in Australia it has carried around a few celebrities like KISS and Fleetwood Mac to name a few.

Today was one of those days that I will remember for a while and many thanks goes to Timmo for taking the time to show me around.
