China Eastern to launch world's longest direct flight- 29 hours in the air

China Eastern Airlines is set to launch the world's longest direct passenger service from Shanghai (PVG/ZSPD) to Buenos Aires (AEP/SABE) on the 4th of December 2025. Covering 12,229 miles, the journey features a two-and-a-half-hour layover in Auckland (AKL/NZAA), where passengers stay on board, maintaining its classification as a direct flight.

The outbound flight takes just under 26 hours, while the return lasts nearly 29 hours, making it the longest nonstop service in commercial aviation. Flights operate twice a week, leaving Shanghai on Mondays and Thursdays and returning from Buenos Aires on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Although the airline has not confirmed the aircraft, analysts expect the Boeing 777-300ER, which is already used on other ultra-long-haul routes. Fares start at around £1,280 one way, with First, Business, and Economy class options. The route strengthens economic and diplomatic ties between China and Argentina while giving travelers a new alternative that bypasses Europe and North America.

Industry experts note that this reflects a growing trend toward ultra-long-haul connectivity in global aviation.

I personally wouldn’t want to sit on a plane grounded for two and a half hours.
