Based on flight data from the aircraft, Delta Air Lines Flight 56, which was carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew members suddenly rose more than 1,000 feet in just 30 seconds and then quickly dropped about 1,450 feet in the next 20 seconds. The plane had to change its route and make an emergency landing in Minneapolis (MSP/KMSP) instead of continuing to Amsterdam.
The aircraft, an Airbus A330, landed safely just before 8 pm local time. Afterwards, emergency responders including the airport's fire department and paramedics were already waiting at the gate when the plane landed. They gave immediate medical assistance to those who were injured in the incident or feeling unwell while some of the passengers with more serious injuries were taken to the hospital for further check-up.
Delta Air Lines released a statement confirming it is actively assisting affected passengers with their immediate needs. It said:
Delta flight DL56 – flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam – diverted to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport Wednesday after the flight encountered significant turbulence while enroute.
The aircraft, an Airbus A330, landed safely at MSP, and medical personnel met the flight upon arrival to evaluate customers and crew. Twenty-five of those on board were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and care. We are grateful for the support of all emergency responders involved.
