Don Mueang International Airport (DMK/VTBD) was known as Bangkok International Airport before 2006. It is one of two international airports serving Bangkok the other being Suvarnabhumi Airport (which I also spent a day at, so keep an eye out for those photos).
The airport is considered to be one of the world's oldest international airports and one of Asia's oldest operating airports. It officially opened as a Royal Thai Air Force base on the 27th of March 1914, although it had been in use earlier. Commercial flights began in 1924, making it one of the world's oldest commercial airports. The airport consists of Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights, which are connected by a unique glass exterior elevated walkway.
In September 2006, Don Mueang Airport was closed and was replaced by the new Suvarnabhumi Airport before reopening again on the 24th of March 2007 after renovations.
My wife and I were there for around an hour before we realised... there was a golf course in the middle of the two runways. How cool but crazy is that.
The golf course has no separation from the runway, and golfers are held back by a red flashing light whenever planes land or take off.
Don Mueang is 3 metres (9 feet) AMSL and has two runways.
- 03L/21R 3,700 metres - 12,139 feet and is Asphalt concrete
- 03R/21L 3,500 metres - 11,483 feet and is Asphalt concrete
