Great news for American travelers

In a major shift to airport security procedures, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has officially ended the requirement for travelers to remove their shoes at screening checkpoints across the United States, effective Monday the 7th of July 2025.

While TSA Pre Check members have long enjoyed this convenience, many regular checkpoints had already relaxed the rule in practice. Now, this new guideline applies universally, streamlining the process for millions of passengers moving through airports daily.

However, there are a few exceptions travelers should be aware of. Individuals who are unable to provide a REAL ID--now fully required as of May 2025-will still be subject to heightened screening protocols, which could include removing shoes. Additionally, those pulled aside for secondary inspection may still be asked to take off their footwear as part of a more thorough check.

According to an internal TSA memo, this policy update comes in response to significant technological advancements and a fresh analysis of current threat assessments. Enhanced scanning systems are now capable of identifying potential risks without needing passengers to remove their shoes / boots, allowing for both improved security and a more efficient passenger experience
