More than 320 flights cancelled at Brisbane Airport
All flights have been axed at two airports today, while more than 320 flights have already been cancelled to and from Brisbane due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The Category two storm stalled overnight and is now expected to make landfall sometime on Friday, likely in the afternoon instead of the anticipated Thursday night.
While four million people brace for the impact – public transport has now been stopped; all schools and most businesses are closed, and bridges will be closed later tonight. The Australian Defence Force has also been activated, and emergency equipment has been prepositioned to respond.
“Decisions on whether to cancel flights are a matter for airlines, and passengers with travel plans over coming days like us, are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline.”
There could also be delays caused by reduced staff levels if employees are unable to get to work amid the cyclone, Air Services Australia said. Air Services Australia said it has staff contingency plans and backup power supplies in place alongside other emergency arrangements to support the sector over the next few days.
“Should emergency services require ongoing access, Air Services will look to support these requirements,” it said.
Qantas / Jetstar has said
“Our teams continue to closely monitor the cyclone, and we are contacting customers directly with any changes to their flights,” Qantas Group said.
“We’re also working alongside the multiple airport authorities, air traffic control and airport services providers to ensure any impact to schedules is clearly communicated to customers and our people.
“The safety of our customers and people is our main priority.
“The situation remains fluid and flight cancellations and delays will evolve over the coming days. We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding.”
Virgin Australia has said
It is unclear exactly which flights Virgin Australia will cancel, but it will be pausing the sale of flights in and out of Gold Coast Airport from midday Thursday until the end of the day on Friday. Passengers with tickets issued before last Monday, for flights heading to Ballina, Brisbane, Bundaberg, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, can now move their flight to a new date for free.
The new flight date will need to be within 14 days subject to flight availability. Travel credits are also available via the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 or the customer’s travel agent.
“Virgin Australia’s meteorologists are closely monitoring Tropical Cyclone Alfred,” a Virgin Australia spokesperson said.
“We recommend guests who are booked to fly to and from southeast Queensland and northern NSW later this week monitor their flight information on the Virgin Australia website.”
