Malaysia Airlines diverts to Alice Springs with engine issues

MALAYSIA AIRLINES AIRBUS A330-323 9M-MTD (MSN 1234)

A Malaysia Airlines flight en route from Melbourne (MEL/YMML) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL/WNKK) was forced to make an emergency landing in Alice Springs (ASP/YBAS) due to a "technical issue" with the engines. The airline stated that Flight MH128, which left Melbourne at approximately 11:34 pm from runway 34, had been diverted to Alice Springs, and arrived in the Alice five and a half hours later.

The aircraft turned around three hours into the flight, at 2.30 am. Once over Alice Springs, the aircraft executed 12 ten-minute circuits, finally landing on runway 12 at 4.35 am Alice Springs time. (5.05 am Melbourne time)

"Malaysia Airlines confirms that Flight MH128 from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur, was diverted to Alice Springs Airport because of a technical issue. The aircraft landed safely at 4:35 am local time," the airline announced. "Efforts are underway to rebook passengers on alternative flights, and arrangements for accommodations and meal expense reimbursements are being made where necessary."

The Airport Development Group (ADG), responsible for Alice Springs Airport, verified that the diversion occurred due to engine problems. "We are relieved to inform that all passengers are safe. We applaud the prompt and efficient action taken by our team, the airline, and the emergency services," said Rob Porter, Executive General Manager – Airports. "A few passengers will spend the night in Alice Springs and will depart on domestic flights the following day."
