2 killed in mid-air plane collision in Nairobi

Two people lost their lives on Tuesday following a mid-air collision of two planes over Kenya's capital Nairobi. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed in a statement that "an aircraft accident occurred at 10.05 EAT (0705GMT) involving a Cessna 172 aircraft belonging to Ninety-Nine Flying School and a DeHavilland Dash 8 belonging to Safarilink Aviation Limited."

The Cessna crashed in Nairobi National Park, killing both occupants, and was destroyed.
The Dash 8 had just departed from Wilson Airport (WIL/HKNW) and safely returned back to the airport after the collision. All 39 passengers and 5 crew on board were not injured.
The aircraft sustained damage to the leading edge of the right-hand horizontal stabilizer.

The Dash 8 was heading to Ukunda Airport (UKA/HKUK) when the crew reported a loud bang soon after take-off from Wilson Airport and decided to turn back, the airline reported.

Investigations, led by the Air Accident Investigation Department and the National Police Service, into the accident were underway, it added.
