Pilot dies in plane crash in rural Queensland

A pilot has perished in a light plane crash in rural southern Queensland.

The pilot, whose age and gender are not yet known, is believed to have been the sole occupant of the plane that went down at Palgrave between Warwick and Stanthorpe this afternoon.
Stanthorpe is 217 kilometers southwest of Brisbane.

Police said they believed the pilot was the only person on board.

"I can confirm that around 12.15pm today a transmission was received that a light plane, a Jabiru J160, was experiencing trouble," Darling Downs police district officer Acting Inspector Paula Smithard said.

“Initial investigations indicate the pilot of the plane did not survive the crash, and it is believed no one else was on board at the time,” Queensland Police said.

“Investigators will work with officials from Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAUS) to determine the cause of the crash.”

Emergency services, including firefighters and paramedics, found significant wreckage at the site.

A small grass fire sparked by the crash quickly burnt out, but the land surrounding the wreckage was blackened.

A LifeFlight helicopter was sent to the area as a search of the wreckage began.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is assisting in the police investigation.
