Air New Zealand aircraft evacuated in Melbourne

AIR NEW ZEALAND B777-319 ZK-OKO (CN 38407)

Passengers were evacuated from an Air New Zealand plane at Melbourne Airport this afternoon after a mystery substance was found inside an overhead compartment. The MFB (Melbourne Fire Brigade) says 20 passengers and crew were removed from the aircraft and their crews found approximately 3 grams of an unknown substance in an overhead luggage compartment. Hazmat technicians donned chemical splash suits and took a sample of the substance for testing, with early tests indicating the substance is not toxic. The substance, a white powder, will be analysed further but has been declared to be safe. The Air New Zealand flight, NZ124 which was due to depart at 12.10pm, was cancelled until testing can be completed and the aircraft deemed as safe. ZK-OKO was the aircraft.
