Dozens of passengers were reportedly injured after a Ryanair flight lost cabin pressure, with some left "bleeding from their ears, mouth or nose". German police said 33 of the 189 passengers on board were taken to a nearby hospital after complaining of headaches, ear pain and nausea. All were able to leave by Saturday morning.
One passenger wrote on Facebook that the air went cold and oxygen masks dropped, saying the plane dropped "3,000 metres in less than one minute”.
Ryanair flight FR7312 took off from Dublin Airport at 8.27pm (local time) last night and was scheduled to land in the Croatian coastal city but was instead diverted to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN/EDFH) after the in-flight depressurisation. The plane landed in Frankfurt-Hahn at just before 11.30 pm local-time.
Oxygen masks were deployed during the incident with passengers on board the flight speaking on social media about their experience. One described it as “the worst moments of my whole life”.
Another passenger shared a photograph on Facebook of oxygen masks dangling from the roof of the plane and complained of hearing problems.
German broadcaster DW reports that some 30 passengers were taken to local hospitals with complaints of earaches and headaches.
Sarah McGarry told The Irish Times that her eardrum burst during the descent but she did not go to hospital because she did not know if she would miss the next flight on to Croatia.
She told the paper: "We’re flying and next of all the oxygen mask comes down, we’re left in darkness for 15 minutes, there’s no reassurance just people shouting ‘emergency, emergency’.
“There was a newborn baby and children on the flight, people are screaming and we don’t know what’s going on for 15 minutes. Then finally we’re told that we’re going to Germany.”
Another unnamed passenger told the paper "it was really scary, there were three to four minutes (that felt like an hour) when the plane was falling fast and I thought we were done for”.
In a statement, Ryanair said that standard procedures were followed during the incident.
“This flight from Dublin to Zadar diverted to Frankfurt-Hahn due to an inflight depressurisation. In line with standard procedure, the crew deployed oxygen masks and initiated a controlled descent,” a Ryanair spokesperson said. The aircraft landed normally and customers disembarked, where a small number received medical attention as a precaution.
In its statement, the airline confirmed that there were issues providing accommodation.
“Customers were provided with refreshment vouchers and hotel accommodation was authorised, however there was a shortage of available accommodation,” the statement said.
“Customers will board a replacement aircraft which will depart to Zadar this morning and Ryanair sincerely apologised for any inconvenience.”
