Just before 9 am yesterday morning a Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 (wearing the Star Alliance colours) was being towed at Frankfurt International Airport (HHN/EDFH), Germany when a fire broke out in the tow tug. The plane sustained substantial damage to the nose and cockpit area, smoke entered the cockpit and flames burnt through the plane's skin and entered the avionics bay, where all instruments and electric cables are located. The aircraft was being prepared for flight LH426 from Frankfurt Airport, Germany to Philadelphia International Airport, USA.  Nobody was seriously injured in the incident. Lufthansa said 10 people, including firefighters and ground staff, were treated for respiratory problems. Frankfurt Airport authorities said the fire, which was "immediately" extinguished, did not cause any disruptions at Germany's busiest airport. D-AIGP was assigned to replace the damaged aircraft, and departed at 3:10PM CEST with a delay of two hours.
