I found out in the middle of last year that Jin Air was going to commence flights into Cairns from the 15th December that year, I had planned to go up for the inaugural but I was going on holidays only a week later so it would be hard to get a few days off just before my 3 weeks off. I had already booked a (surprise) holiday for my family up here in Cairns anyway so I thought I could kill two birds with one stone as they saying goes. So not only did i get to see the Jin Air for the first time but also the Virgin Freighter BAe 146
Cairns Airport (IATA: CNS, ICAO: YBCS) in far north Queensland, is a domestic and international airport located 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) north of the Cairns central business district in the suburb of Aeroglen. The airport has a single asphalt runway, 15 / 33 which is 3,156 m (10,354 ft.) long and is 3 metres (10 feet) ASML. There was a smaller cross runway, 12 / 30 which was 925 m (3,035 feet) long; that runway was used for general aviation. As of April 2011 this runway was closed and is not expected to reopen.
Formerly operated by the Cairns Port Authority, the airport was sold by the Queensland Government in December 2008 to a private consortium.
The airport has 10 international airlines (7 permanent and 3 seasonal) servicing flights to 18 international destinations. They also have 9 domestic airlines servicing 30 domestic destinations and many general aviation flights including a number of helicopter operators.
Cairns also gets many international charter flights; as an example a Thompson Fly 757 is on the ground today which flew in from Apia yesterday.
