Few more Brisbane- Monday Afternoon

I was informed this morning that Brisbane will be getting a two Military KC135's late this afternoon / evening. So after work I headed out to the airport in the hope that these two will arrive on time around 5.10 and 5.20 respectively. Sunset was at 5.18pm and last light was 5.44pm, but unfortunately as luck would have it the first KC didn't arrive until 5.52pm and by then it was drizzling. The second arrived at 6.03 but I didn't wait for it.

Airline apologises to gay couple asked to move for straight couple

This story I just found is really hard to believe, especially in this day and age. The humiliation this couple would have felt would be incredible.

Alaska Airlines apologised this week after a flight attendant asked a gay man to give up his seat next to his partner so a straight couple could sit together, an exchange that put the airline on the defensive as it rebutted claims of discrimination.
David Cooley, the owner of a gay bar in West Hollywood, California called the Abbey, wrote on Facebook that he and his partner had boarded a flight to Los Angeles from New York when a flight attendant asked if Cooley's partner would move from his seat "so a couple could sit together."
Cooley said he told the attendant that the two men were a couple and that he wanted to sit with his partner. But the attendant gave Cooley's partner a choice: Move for the other couple or get off the plane. "We could not bear the feeling of humiliation for an entire cross-country flight and left the plane," Cooley said. "I cannot believe that an airline in this day and age would give a straight couple preferential treatment over a gay couple and go so far as to ask us to leave."

Through a spokesman, Cooley declined to comment further. But his posts about the exchange on Facebook and Twitter brought a wave of criticism, with many noting that the exchange was a stark example of the discrimination that LGBT people experience in travel and business.
Alaska Airlines said it reached out to Cooley on Twitter and issued a public apology saying the company would offer to refund his ticket and was "deeply sorry for the situation and did not intend to make Mr Cooley and his partner feel uncomfortable in any way."
But the airline said the encounter was not a case of discrimination, characterising what happened as a "seating error" and calling itself a "zero-tolerance company that does not support discrimination of any kind."

Triple treat for Brisbane

Today Brisbane had a triple treat as far as aviation goes.
First of all we had Celine Dion here in Brisbane for the last three days and she flew out this afternoon for Melbourne. Thanks to my friend Lloyd for sending this through.

Then last night we had a Dubai Air Wing 747 freighter call into Brisbane from melbourne, ( it actually flew over our house last night) and it departed this afternoon.

Then last but not least Qantas's new 787-9 VH-ZND in the Yam Dreaming livery came into Brisbane this afternoon for the first time. I saw this in Melbourne a few weeks ago for the first time but couldn't get any good pictures of it. I managed to get a few photos of it as it flew in over our office earlier this afternoon. This aircraft features the artwork of the late Northern Territory artist and senior Anmatyerre woman, Emily Kame Kngwarrye. The design is taken from her 1991 painting YAM.

I then went out to the airport later this afternoon to get this and the Dubai 747 leave.

I really love Bizjets and it was a nice surprises to see some getting around this afternoon.

Aeromexico plane crashes at airport; 85 injured.

Eighty-five people have been injured after an Aeromexico flight crashed while trying to abort a take off.  Flight 2431 was taking off from Guadalupe Victoria International Airport (DGO / MMDO) in Durango bound for Mexico City (MEX / MMMX) yesterday  afternoon. The plane was taking off when it tried to abort the takeoff due to bad weather, but it was too late. The plane went down after the runway ended, Aispuro Torres said.  Weather reports showed scattered storms in the area at the time of the accident. Although a fire broke out after the plane crashed, none of the injured appear to have suffered from burns, Alejandro Cardoza, a spokesperson for the Durango Civil Protection, said on Mexican television. The fire appears to be under control, Aispuro Torres told reporters. "It is confirmed that there were no deaths following the accident.  There were 97 passengers and four crew members aboard the Embraer 190 plane. AeroMexico, which is the country’s national airline, is regarded as an extremely safe airline and hasn’t had an accident with a fatality in more than 30 years. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear but information indicated the crash was “due to adverse weather conditions.”
