EVA Air is investigating the death of a flight attendant who passed away after finishing her shift. The Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union has urged the airline to look into the matter and show more concern for crew health issues. The airline learned about the attendant's death on the 11th of October and is staying in touch with the family.
On Sunday a flight attendant fell ill during duty but received no prompt assistance from the cabin supervisor despite repeatedly asking for assistance. The flight attendant then sought medical attention after disembarking but was again denied help, resulting in hospitalization and ultimately death. Online users blamed the incident on systemic neglect of crew health in the airline industry, raising wider concerns about workplace safety.
The union pointed out the unique challenges flight attendants face, such as irregular schedules, overwork, cabin pressure, and UV exposure, which can significantly weaken their immune systems. While EVA Air doesn’t force sick employees to work, its strict leave policies impact performance reviews, promotions, and year-end bonuses. The union argued that these policies discourage workers from taking essential sick leave, even when facing serious health risks as in this case.
EVA Air expressed sadness over the flight attendant's passing and announced the start of a formal investigation into the incident on Monday. The airline is staying in touch with the family of the deceased to offer support during this challenging time. The company reaffirmed its dedication to employee welfare as the investigation continues to uncover the details surrounding the tragedy.
