Qantaslink is set to close three bases early 2026

QantasLink has announced plans to shut down its pilot and cabin crew bases in Hobart (HBA/YMHB), Canberra (CBR/YSCB), and Mildura (MQL/YMIA) starting April 2026, impacting approximately 70 staff members.

The airline announced that the decision is part of its efforts to streamline operations and enhance reliability as it renews its regional fleet. CEO Rachel Yangoyan emphasized that employees will not be required to permanently relocate, with the option to continue working from major bases while living in their home communities. Qantas is also providing support packages to assist staff during the transition.

The announcement has sparked criticism from the Transport Workers Union, labeling the closures a "setback for regional aviation." Federal Transport Minister Catherine King urged Qantas to rethink its decision, emphasizing the need for airlines to act as long-term partners for regional communities rather than focusing on short-term gains.

However, QantasLink and the Qantas group are notorious for prioritizing their own agenda, often disregarding the impact on regional areas. Despite the backlash, QantasLink is moving forward with its investment in new Airbus A220s and additional Q400 turboprops, maintaining that the closures will not disrupt regional flight services.
