WESTJET BOEING 737-7CT C-GWSQ (MSN 37091)

A WestJet aircraft traveling from Toronto (YYZ/CYYZ) to Sint Maarten’s Princess Juliana airport (SXM/TNCM) suffered damage to its right wing, after its right main landing gear collapsed on landing on runway 10 at Sint Maarten’s yesterday.

The 737 was operating as flight 2276 and was carrying 164 passengers and crew members.

Confirming the incident, WestJet stated that the aircraft “experienced a hard landing upon arrival at Sint Maarten at around 13:31 local time. There was no fire, though the aircraft suffered damage to its right wing”.

Social media images show the aircraft resting on the runway on its right engine nacelle.

WestJet added: “Emergency services responded immediately, deploying foam as a precaution. The aircraft’s slides were activated, and all guests and crew safely evacuated and were transported to the terminal. All guests are accounted for and there are no reported injuries.”

The incident had led to the closure of the airport, as airport officials worked to remove the aircraft from the runway. The airport remained closed until 16:00 local time.
