El Al flies on Saturday for first time since 1982

EL AL BOEING 787-9 4X-EDJ (MSN 65086)

El Al will operate its first flights on a Saturday since 1982, as it will help Israeli reservist soldiers return to the country.

At the time, the airline was ordered to halt flying on Shabbat, a so-called rest day practiced by Jewish people, when no work activity could occur, by then-Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin. According to a report by The Washington Post at the time, El Al employees estimated that 900 of their colleagues would lose their jobs because of the move.

Now, facing a perilous safety situation following Hamas' attack on Israel on the 7th of October 2023, El AI will fly again on Saturday, the 14th of October 2023. The airline will focus on collecting army reservists who were called to service, as many international carriers that operated flights to Israel canceled their services as the security situation worsened.

According to the airline's post on social media, it will operate rescue flights from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK/KJFK) and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK/VTBS) to Israel to return soldiers to the country who have been called up to service.

The airline stated, "We haven't flown on a Saturday since 1982 and have been worried to preserve this status line for many decades.
