I have lived in Brisbane for almost 25yrs now and Archerfield Airport is only about 4 nautical miles from my house yet I have never spotted there...ever. As I was near Archerfield I thought I would give it a go for about an hour. It wasn't long before I discovered it was the same traffic doing touch and go's so it got very boring very quickly
Archerfield Airport (IATO: None - ICAO: YBAF) has four runways; they are 10L / 28R at 1,471 metres long (4,826 feet) this is their main runway; and 10R / 28L at 1,100 metres long (3,609 feet) both these runways are asphalt.
04L / 22R is 1,245 metres long (4,085 feet) and 04R / 22L is 1,100 metres long (3,609 feet) both these runways are grass / natural runways. Archerfield is 19 metres (63 feet) AMSL
Archerfield Tower is open between 0700 and 1700 hours and outside these hours Archerfield becomes CTAF. During this time the longest runway 10L / 28R becomes the main active runway for both arrivals and departures. The grass runways are not available during CTAF hours.
Archerfield Airport is Brisbane's secondary airport and Queensland's major centre for general aviation activities. Archerfield airport was established in the early 1930's and served as Brisbane's primary and international airport up until 1949 with Qantas, Ansett ANA and Trans Australia Airlines offering Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) services.
During World War II the airport became a hive of activity hosting the Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Netherlands Air Force, United States Army Air Forces and Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. Following World War II, Eagle Farm dominated aviation activity and Archerfield assumed secondary significance. Archerfield turned its focus towards flight training and in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s, movements peaked at approximately 320,000 per year.
